On the stock DSMs the crankshaft pulley is two pieces of metal separated by a layer of rubber. The inner part bolts to the crankshaft and the outer part has the belts attached to it. As the crankshaft rotates, that rubber layer absorbs any shocks / jolts inflicted the accessories (water pump, alternator, power steering, A/C, etc) and protects the crankshaft from damage. This component is called a ‘dampener pulley’. Also, as the crankshaft rotates it does wobble (very very very slightly, but it does), and the dampener pulley flexs slightly to allow the the outer ring to move (thereby counter-acting the crankshaft wobble.) This dampener pulley ensures a long engine life.

On most V8s there’s a dampener and there’s a pulley. They are two separate pieces that bolt on next to each other. When Unorthedox built an underdrive pulley for them, it simply replaced the stock pulley. No prob.

But if you replace the OEM pulley on a DSM with an Unorthedox pulley, you’re removing the dampener portion and you’re just asking to snap drivetrain parts (usually the crankshaft.)
